How To Maximize The Benefits Of Your Workout With These Superfoods

You already know the benefits of exercising. Nothing beats the high you get from an early morning run, the rush of endorphins after a game of soccer, or the peace and clarity you feel after a yoga session.

But if you want to get the most out of your workouts, you need to fuel your body with nutrient-dense foods that can give you more power and energy – in a word, superfoods. A study shows that a person’s diet is the key component in performance enhancement and post-exercise recovery!

Here is a list of superfoods to charge up your workout, along with suggestions on how to incorporate them into your diet!


1. Cacao powder

Certified sports nutritionist Fia Batua recommends taking pure cacao powder before a workout. “I love taking cacao powder or nibs in the morning because of the rich antioxidant content and the anti-depressant effect of this superfood,” says Batua, who is also a registered nutritionist-dietitian and a certified Elite Fitness Coach.

Cacao also improves blood flow. This means more oxygen, less fatigue, and better performance.

Mix a scoop of cacao powder with warm plant-based milk and honey and drink it before your workout.


2. Chia seeds

These black and white seeds may be tiny, but they are packed with nutrients. Ancient Mayan and Aztec societies used them to boost energy and stamina. “Chia seeds are rich in fibre and are a good source of plant protein,” says Batua. 

After a workout, try adding chia seeds to a smoothie. These amazing seeds provide both quality carbs and protein needed by the body to recover. For a power-packed breakfast, try to make overnight oats with chia seeds!


3. Moringa

Moringa is rich in phytonutrients, and is good for those who engage in sports because it combats oxidative stress. This occurs when your body has an imbalance of antioxidants to fight the free radicals which cause harm to the body. 

It also contains a wide range of B-vitamins that naturally boost energy. With four times more vitamin C than oranges, moringa keeps your immune system strong and healthy so that you can work out consistently.

Simply add a scoop of moringa to your salad dressings to add flavour and boost it with nutrients.

Batua also suggests adding it to vegetable juices or teas because of its antioxidant content and anti-inflammatory effect.


4. Turmeric

Dubbed as the “golden root,” turmeric is known for its healing and anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it ideal for post-workout recovery. It helps reduce soreness after a high-intensity workout and keeps your joints healthy. It also helps detoxify the body and lowers cholesterol.

Add turmeric to your smoothies, make tea out of it or use it in your cooking – it’s that easy to incorporate into your diet!


5. Maca

If you want to increase your stamina and level up your workouts, add maca to your meals. Maca is a root vegetable native to Peru and is commonly available in powder form.

Maca powder is a great energy booster,” says Maebelle Anne Tiongson RND, a registered nutritionist-dietitian and a member of the Nutritionist-Dietitians’ Association of the Philippines.

It has been shown to increase glucose in the bloodstream, providing us with sustenance for continued exercise.

Add a tablespoon of maca powder to your smoothie or protein shake. You can also add it to energy balls or no-bake treats!


Whether you consume them before or after a workout, the important thing is to incorporate a little bit of these superfoods into your diet. At the end of the day, a healthy lifestyle includes both engaging in exercise and consuming healthy foods.

The common denominator of all these foods are antioxidants. Antioxidants are our bodies’ way of combating free radicals that damage our cells,” says Tiongson.
